Exceptional Brooch with Mabé Pearl, Onyx and Approx. 1.80 ct of Diamonds – 18K Gold, 20th Century

An exceptionally striking 20th-century brooch crafted from 18-karat gold, combining a large Mabé pearl, black onyx and 76 diamonds with a combined weight of approximately 1.80 ct. Measuring 3.10 × 3.10 cm and weighing 26.90 g, it is a substantial and distinctive jewel with a strong geometric character.

The centrepiece is an impressive white Mabé pearl measuring 14.7 mm in diameter, with an estimated weight of approximately 10 ct. The pearl displays a very good lustre and a subtle pink overtone. Its soft, luminous surface creates an elegant contrast with the deep black of the polished onyx.

A decorative four-petal motif set with diamonds surrounds the pearl, while the entire composition is enclosed within a geometric, rounded frame also decorated with gemstones. The combination of black onyx, white pearl and the intense brilliance of the diamonds gives the brooch a refined, graphic character.

The brooch is set with 76 diamonds totalling approximately 1.80 ct, graded G–H colour and VS–SI clarity. These include 48 brilliant-cut diamonds totalling approximately 0.96 ct and 28 diamonds in simplified 8/8 cuts totalling approximately 0.84 ct. The variation in stone sizes and setting techniques creates an engaging play of light across both the central motif and the outer frame.

Particular attention is drawn to the exceptional precision of the craftsmanship. The individual elements are carefully fitted, while the regularity of the diamond settings, symmetry of the four-petal motif and precise combination of onyx, pearl and gold reflect a high level of jewellery craftsmanship. The brooch also has a pronounced three-dimensional character, while its substantial weight further emphasises the quality and solidity of its construction.

An additional advantage is its dual functionality. Besides being worn as a traditional brooch, it can also serve as a decorative clasp for a strand of pearls. In this configuration, the large Mabé pearl naturally becomes part of the necklace composition, while the onyx and diamonds create a striking central accent. This thoughtful solution significantly expands the ways in which this exceptional piece can be worn.
