Striking Tubogas Snake Ring with Diamonds – 18K Gold, 1970s Style

An exceptional snake-form ring crafted from 18-karat yellow gold, weighing an impressive 13.59 g. Its flexible, spiral body wraps around the finger several times, culminating in a distinctly sculpted snake head decorated with diamonds.

The construction of the ring is inspired by the renowned Tubogas technique, one of the most characteristic forms of Italian 20th-century jewellery. The name derives from the flexible, ribbed gas tubing whose structure is reflected in the gold bands forming the elastic, spring-like body of the jewellery. Traditional Tubogas construction is achieved by tightly wrapping metal strips so that their edges interlock, creating a flexible structure without soldering individual links together.

In this ring, the technique works particularly well with the snake motif. The regular gold segments create an impression reminiscent of scales, while the flexible construction allows the ring to wrap naturally around the finger. The combination of the serpentine form and Tubogas technique became one of the most recognisable motifs of Italian jewellery design in the second half of the 20th century, particularly associated with the bold aesthetic of the 1970s, when Tubogas experienced a major revival.

The snake’s head is treated in a more sculptural manner, featuring a smooth, polished surface and softly contoured three-dimensional form. It is decorated with 6 diamonds in 8/8 cut, positioned across the head and at the eyes. Their subtle sparkle provides an elegant contrast to the warm glow of the yellow gold while preserving the strong, graphic character of the design.

With a weight of 13.59 g, the ring is a striking example of statement jewellery. At the same time, its spring-like construction gives it the characteristic flexibility associated with Tubogas, allowing the substantial form to remain comfortable and dynamic on the finger.

The snake motif has been present in jewellery for centuries, traditionally associated with rebirth, vitality and transformation. In 20th-century jewellery, it became one of the defining motifs of Italian design. Combined with the Tubogas technique, it creates a piece particularly characteristic of the bold and sculptural jewellery aesthetic of the 1970s.
