Absolutely Spectacular Art Deco Double Clip Brooch with 170 Diamonds, Approx. 11.35 ct – Platinum, 1920–1940

An absolutely spectacular Art Deco Double Clip brooch dating from 1920–1940. This monumental and exceptionally intricate composition is crafted in platinum and set with an impressive 170 diamonds in three distinct cuts, with an estimated total weight of approximately 11.35 ct. The total weight of the piece is 38.94 g.

This is a remarkable jewel that captures the essence of the most sophisticated Art Deco jewellery: geometry, symmetry, the contrast between different diamond cuts and exceptional precision of craftsmanship. The design comprises two almost mirror-image sections, formed from fans, arches, spirals and bold geometric lines. Each section has its own rhythm, yet when joined, the two elements form a single elaborate and striking ornament.

Particularly impressive is the use of baguette-cut diamonds. Forty stones of this cut, with a combined weight of approximately 2.00 ct, are arranged in radiant, architectural sequences. Their clean, linear forms contrast with the scintillating surfaces of the other diamonds, establishing the geometry of the entire design—a defining characteristic of the finest Art Deco jewellery.

The elaborate spiral and fan-shaped sections are almost entirely covered with 116 diamonds in the simplified 8/8 cut, with a combined weight of approximately 6.90 ct, in colours G–J and clarities VS–SI. Dozens of small stones create a dense, luminous surface, allowing the brooch to respond beautifully to every movement and change in lighting.

The composition is completed by 14 old brilliant-cut diamonds, with a combined weight of approximately 2.45 ct, in colours G–H and clarities VS–SI. Their more individual character and distinctive light reflection beautifully soften the precision of the geometric construction.

In total, the brooch is adorned with 170 diamonds weighing approximately 11.35 ct. Yet even more impressive than the total carat weight is the way the stones have been incorporated into the design. There is no single central diamond; instead, the entire piece has been conceived as a true architecture of light, with the baguettes establishing direction and rhythm while the remaining diamonds create brilliant, light-filled surfaces.

Double Clip – An Icon of Art Deco Jewellery

One of the most fascinating features of this jewel is its Double Clip construction. The brooch consists of two independent clips that can be joined to form one large, striking ornament. When separated, each clip becomes a self-contained piece of jewellery.

Transformable jewels of this kind are among the most distinctive achievements of Art Deco jewellery design. They allowed the wearer to adapt the way the piece was worn to suit an outfit or occasion—as one large brooch or as two separate clips attached to lapels, a neckline or a dress.

In this example, the Double Clip concept is realised to particularly dramatic effect. The spiral centres, radially arranged baguettes and geometric diamond-set surfaces combine to create a monumental, almost architectural composition.

The setting is crafted in platinum, whose cool tone remains almost entirely concealed beneath the exceptionally rich diamond decoration. This allows the eye to focus primarily on the brilliance and geometry of the stones. Claw, grain and channel settings have been used, selected to suit the individual cuts and elements of the design. The pin is made of gold.

With a weight of 38.94 g, this is an unquestionably impressive and highly representative jewel. Its scale, more than 11 carats of diamonds, extraordinary craftsmanship and transformable construction make it far more than a decorative accessory. It is above all an exceptional collector’s piece and a fine example of Art Deco jewellery.
